⚡️Should you EVER work for free as a Webflower?⚡️

Jack

Freelancer

Hey Webflailers - it’s Jack.

I've been working for free on a project.

WHAT?! YOU'RE NOT MEANT TO DO THAT, JACK

I know compadre. A lot of people say don't work for free.

But I actually approached them to ask if I could work for free.

It's this community garden project. The plan is to turn a disused and overgrown viaduct in to a green oasis to learn and play.

But their website is a digital jungle that needs some pruning and tidying before any funding will come in...

And I want to work with companies that do some kind of social or environmental good and I figured this would be a perfect portfolio piece.

I've done this before and got more of the same type of work because I have examples to show.

Show the work you want to get - whether you get there with free or paid work, it doesn't matter..!

Sometimes, you've got to do the free to do the same work but paid (or that's my experience so far).

96.8% of you are missing out...

I did a poll and found out of the Webflowers that follow me, only 3.2% use SavvyCal.

I was amazed.

So much of being a freelancer involves scheduling meetings with people and also time blocking.

I've found other scheduling tools don't cut the mustard but SavvyCal is just superior.

  • Time blocking so you have deep focus time
  • Polling for multiple people in different timezones
  • Calendar overlay so no double booking
  • Personalised branding for calendar invites with a premium experience
  • Workflows to create project management to-do’s

Just SavvyCal it!

It’s a Savvy tool for a Savvy Webflower.

(Yes, I am calling myself Savvy…)

Getting clients from... Instagram?!

I've been heavily focussed on Twitter & LinkedIn until now.

In the coworking space I was in, I noticed very few people used Twitter and LinkedIn so I got back in to using Instagram through that.

But then I noticed a lot of people used IG was like a living portfolio - daily updates of what they're working on and snippets of their life.

It was fun, casual and felt less formulated than Twitter and LinkedIn to me.

So to explore, I put this video on IG and got 2 inbound inquiries from it! (Did they go anywhere? No - course not)

But I am excited about creating videos of work and generally sharing more on IG.

Here's why:

  • Fewer Webflowers seem to be on IG than Twitter and LinkedIn - maybe this is just my network but still seems interesting to stand out on a platform less common with Webflowers.
  • We make visual things (branding, web design, developed websites) and so in my tiny head, it makes sense to be on a visual platform.
  • Videos are engaged with more than images + there are fewer people doing video than the demand for video so they are pushed more on social platforms
  • The type of websites I want to do are more 3D focussed which is hopefully engaging and shareable - IG has huge reach potential
  • I made this silly video which people seemed to like (?) and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed making it so I wanted to do more video

Anyway, will keep you guys updated on progress as I slowly creep back in to freelancing and explore different channels and more.

Ep 94 | Learning the business of freelancing | with David Anierobi

Today, my guest is David Anierobi!‍

Some David facts:

  • He’s a designer and web developer located somewhere in Amsterdam (currently although he's a digital nomadding around at this stage of life)
  • He’s passionate about education too - with a YouTube channel with 2.12K subs where he teaches tips about Webflow, and a mentorship program called unlocking the power of Webflow, the man shares as much as he devs.
  • He freelances with clients and also freelancing for agencies.
  • He’s probably got one of the biggest smiles out there in the Webflow space.

His philosophy in life is "I can do all things... if given the right opportunity and chance to" which is beautiful - he’s hustled and bustled to get to the position that he’s in in life. BUT, has it been easy? Has it always been predestined?

Or has he had some face-plants and failures along the way that have given him the insights he needed to succeed?!The fails we’ll talk about in today’s episode are:

1) Not understanding the business of freelancing. Not getting full disclosure Or details for a project and it didn’t end well.

2) Being too positive made you lose a good gig. Never saying “NO”. This is a situation I still battle with 😆

3) Placing more focus on tools rather than people and connection
